Myopia Control in Children

Myopia, or the inability to see objects in the distance, usually start when patients are in their early elementary school years.  Many children first notice that they have myopia when they are unable to see the same distant objects that their friends can see. We at Advanced Family Eye Care know a lot about myopia control in children and myopia control in Torrance, CA. If you or your child have become aware that they are having difficulty seeing, eye care treatment is possible.

Myopia Control in Children

Myopia Diagnosis

Myopia is usual diagnosed during a standard eye exam. One of most common methods to correct myopia in children is to wear some type of corrective lenses. Glasses or contact lenses can refocus the light that comes into a child's eyes, allowing them to see clearly.

While glasses or contact lenses will help a child to be able to see, for many kids it means wearing those glasses for the rest of their lives. This is particularly true for many children who have eyes that will continue to grow and change over the next several years. In fact, many of these children will experience continuously decreasing vision over the next several years.

Myopia Treatment

As a child's eyes grow and change, it is very likely that their vision will continue to deteriorate. In many cases, a child who starts off only requiring glasses some of the time will eventually require glasses all the time. In more extreme cases, a child's eyes will continue to change to the point that they are at risk for very serious conditions such as a detached retina.

Fortunately, there is a new way to slow down the changes in a child's eyes. New eye drops are now available that contain a protein that slows down or stops the change and deformation of the lens as a child grows. By using these drops on a regular basis, it is possible to stop or at least slow down the progression of myopia in kids.

It should be noted that the drops are not able to reverse myopia, only slow down or "freeze" the condition where it stands today. In some cases, the drops will only be recommended for children who are at risk for severe progression of the condition.
