There are many people over the age of 40 that currently suffer from an eye disease or vision disorder. However, children are no strangers to eye diseases or vision disorders. Does My Child Need Eye Care Treatment?
It's recommended that children visit the optometrist and get an eye exam annually regardless of age. You may also need to visit the optometrist if you feel your child is suffering from a vision disorder. Common signs of a vision disorder in children include:
- Having to sit close front to a whiteboard or chalkboard to see clearly
- Complaining of headaches and inability to focus
- Having to squint in order to see clearly
- Failing grades due to not seeing instructions clearly
Be sure to ask your child if you notice any of these signs, and be aware that your child may not know that the quality of their vision is not normal.
Myopia Control in Children
For children that cannot see things far away, this is a condition known as nearsightedness, or myopia. It can be caused by a variety of illnesses, such as refractive errors of the eye or astigmatism.
In order to control myopia properly, an optometrist on our team may recommend specialty contact lenses such as orthokeratology (ortho-k) or soft lenses for myopia management. He or she may also conduct follow-up exams to determine the extent of your child's vision disorder and can conduct preventative care.
